WHAT IS NOVEL CORONAVIRUS 2019?
Novel Coronavirus 2019 is a new coronavirus strain not previously identified in humans. On February 11, 2020 the World Health Organizationannounced SARS-CoV-2 as the official name of the new virus responsible for the COVID-19 disease.

HOW IS THIS VIRUS DIFFERENT FROM THE FLU?
Check out this piece created by VOX who is a general interest news site. They have put together an excellent video explaining the difference between Coronavirus and the regular Flu. For more information on this video, visit vox.com or visit https://youtu.be/FVIGhz3uwuQ

HOW IS THE VIRUS SPREAD?
The virus that causes COVID-19 appears to spreading easily in the community in some affected areas. This is why CDC recommends isolating infected individuals until they no longer pose a risk of infecting others. The CDC states that coronaviruses commonly spread from person to person through close personal contact, in the air by coughing or sneezing, touching surfaces or objects with the virus on it and then touching your nose, mouth or eyes before washing your hands.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
According to the CDC, symptoms may appear in as few as 2 days and even up to 14 days after exposure (based on the incubation period of MERS-CoV viruses).

The CDC has reported patients infected by COVID-19 to have experienced illnesses ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness.

Symptomns include:
•Fever
•Cough
•Shortness of Breath

HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF AND MY LOVED ONES?
According to the CDC, the best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to the virus. Take steps to protect yourself including:
•Frequent hand washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds;
•Use hand sanitizer if soap is not available;
•Avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes with unwashed hands;
•Avoid close contact with people who are sick;
•Practice social distancing to reduce the risk of contracting the virus.

If you are sick, stay home and get medical attention. Cover your sneezes and coughs and wear a face mask.

Clean and Disinfect frequently touched surfaces every day. Doorknobs, light switches, cell phones, keyboards and faucets are a few examples.

To disinfect, the CDC recommends a diluted household bleach solution, 70% alcohol or an EPA-registered product from List N Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2.

While no current EPA registered disinfectants have claims regarding this specific virus, any product that qualifies for emerging pathogen claims per the EPA’s “Guidance to Registrants: Process for Making Claims Against Emerging Viral Pathogens not on EPA-registered Disinfectant Labels” can make the following claim: This product has demonstrated effectiveness against viruses similar to 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) on hard, non-porous surfaces. Therefore, this product can be used against 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) when used in accordance with the directions for use against
Norovirus on hard, non-porous surfaces.

Refer to the CDC website: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/

Intercon’s multi-quat mega 1, Pro-Con SYSTEMS turquoise 3 and Pure Bioscience’s Pure Hard Surface are three such disinfectants and can make this emerging pathogens claim. If any of your customers need a disinfectant that will be effective against this emerging pathogen, multi-quat mega 1, Pro-Con SYSTEMS turquoise 3 or Pure Hard Surface are the products of choice for environmental disinfection.

The products are listed on the EPA List N: Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2. List N includes products that meet EPA’s criteria for use against SARS-CoV-2, the cause of COVID-19. Please note that many products are listed under the primary registration name, and it may differ from the product name you know. You should reference the EPA registration number for confirmation.
